Using iPads at school

Why an iPad?

 

Technology is a tool for teachers that enhances authentic and creative work. It stimulates them to search for new solutions, it activates them and doesn't allow routine to slip in the teaching process. Pupils react to it very lively, they are more active, participate in classes more willingly, they take electronic notes and use e- learning platforms. They perceive technology at school as something ordinary, as a part of modern education and it doesn't make their interest in lessons decrease. We strongly believe that it is the right direction.

iPad applications enrich the process of learning at school and outside of it. Learning becomes more interactive, absorbing and close to real life. Everyone knows that natural curiosity of children leads to better motivation and better educational results. Variety of educational applications which constantly widens, brings unlimited opportunities of creative education and ways to acquire knowledge.

"European" English Language Primary School decided to realise the program "iPad for each pupil" in order to deepen involvement and stimulate cooperation. It makes learning an individual process. Pupils get the equipment indispensable for effective learning. The educational environment becomes inspiring and dynamic.

Lessons with iPads give teachers opportunities for pupil's and their own development. By using different applications pupils and teachers make interesting and interactive lessons. Fast information searching, using Safari, dictionary apps and online dictionaries accelerates the process of learning. Pupils can archive, plan and remember a lot from lessons thanks to making presentations, mind maps and e- books. Teacher becomes the coordinator of the learning process which can become an amazing educational adventure if capably prepared. If you have an iPad, school is closer to you, and you are closer to school. AppStore offers thousands of educational apps. Pupils use them while doing their homework, taking notes and learning for exams. Teachers use apps helping conduct lessons, organising their work and monitoring pupils' development.

Pupils' needs are personalised. Each iPad has a bunch of various solutions useful for people with different needs. They can be easily adjusted to pupils' abilities and preferences. These technological solutions support their users in the areas of:

  • sight
  • Hearing and speaking
  • Physical capabilities and motor skills
  • Cognitive abilities

What's the iPad system pupils work with?

 

iPad is a device that can be used in many different ways. Some advantages of using it at school are, e.g. its light weight, variety of apps thanks to AppStore, iTunes U access; iTunes University- where you can find films and podcasts from significant educational institutions from over the world; iTunes Store with podcasts and music useful for all lessons. Another advantage of iPads is browsing the Internet very quickly, didacticism and sharing files with others.

XXI century is very complex and global. This educational imperative will increase young people's ability to analyse, it increases their critical thinking in the world full of information and different technologies. The needs and educational styles of young generation correlate with their connection with digital technologies. It's integral with their lifestyle, behaviour and character development. Thanks to 1:1 education with iPads pupils can stay in their own world, both at school and at home. Using wireless  net pupils are given opportunity to experience education. Thanks to the iPad system 1:1 pupils have access to education everywhere and every time- in the classroom, at home or even on holidays.

Personalised education 1:1 limits digital division

1:1 allows independent learning, peer cooperation and presentation of pupil's understanding of something by means of rich technology.

Increasing pupils' ability to learn is the core strategy of a professional school. It is easy and natural to focus on logistics of integrated information and communication technology while professional teaching is an absolute priority.

Professional program of IT must develop teacher's skills, self confidence and, what is the most important, it must help teachers develop branches in pedagogy with new technology. Pupils learn using all their senses. Working with iPads allows them use their sight, touch and hearing. Pupils listen to audiobooks, operate apps using their sense of touch, see different presentations, some are in 3D e.g. human's body. Pupils can also conduct virtual chemical, biological and physical experiments.

We have to follow the spirit of development but we can't give ourselves up to it entirely. Pupils will still use books, course books and workbooks. iPads supplement traditional teaching methods, engaging pupils more in lessons. Having an iPad can be compared to a light school bag. Paper books can stay at school. Pupils can use either paper or e- books on their iPads.

 

How do we train our teachers?

 

One of the tasks modern schools perform is preparing pupils to live in information society. It can be acquired by teaching them use computers and information technology and then using this technology during different classes and learning stages. Performing this task is a very long and important operation.

iPads are irreplaceable tools for teachers and pupils.

 

Intensive teachers' trainings and their constant development are crucial in the process of implementing iPads at school. Searching for and evaluation of apps are everyday activities.

Teachers prepare their lessons using active methods, making interactive classes with iPads. Their lessons are based on Blended Learning.

Each iPad is configured with the TVs thanks to AppleTV devices.

Look and learn.

AppleTV device allows sending information wirelessly from an iPad to the HD televisions we have. We use this technique for traditional presentations and brainstorming. Thanks to AppleTV pupils can also share their presentations on big screen.

 

Can children use iPads to play games?

iPads in "European" Language Primary School are used only for educational purposes therefore downloading games and using them at school is forbidden. Pupils can only use educational apps teachers pick. iPads are personalised and protected from improper usage. Pupils can also use the Internet but only if the teacher allows them to.

 

Who is the owner of the iPads?

The School buys and insures iPads for pupils and teachers. It means the School is their owner. Pupils get them for use at school and home throughout the whole process of education. After having completed lasting 6 years primary school education, iPads with their content become the property of pupils.

 

What apps do we use?

iPads give teachers unlimited opportunity to make interactive, engaging and motivating lessons adjusted to pupils' needs and interests. Lessons can become more fascinating by using different educational apps, interactive books, lectures, virtual trips and presentations made by experts and institutions from all over the world.


Most of this attractive information has been divided into groups of collections what makes it easier for teachers to find things they need for their lessons. These collections can be found in four places: AppStore, iBooks Store, iTunes U and iTunes Store.
